What Are Psychosocial Hazards?
Psychosocial hazards arise from the way work is organised, social factors within the workplace, and the broader work environment. Such hazards can cause stress, burnout as well as other forms of mental health issues. Read more
Examples of psychosocial hazards include:
- High demands on jobs or unclear expectations.
- Unwanted attention, bullying, harassment or discrimination.
- Lack of support from either management or colleagues.
- Poorly managed organisational change.
A Legal Duty in Australia
In Australia, all employers have a legal duty to be able to demonstrate that they are managing the psychosocial hazards in their workplace. This issue has now become one of the main areas of focus for the safety regulator in each state of Australia.
The penalties for non compliance are harsh. For example, a government services organisation were fined $379,000 by the coroner for failing to adopt an adequate process for identifying risks to psychological health in the workplace.
And it’s not just legally required – it’s needed for the safety of your team.
Why Managing Psychosocial Hazards Matters
If psychosocial hazards are not addressed, absenteeism increases, turnover rates are higher and productivity is lower. More importantly, it can lead to serious harm to your employees’ mental and physical health.
By proactively tackling these issues, you can:
- Reduce the amount of workplace injuries and psychological harm.
- Create a great environment for employees to work in – improving morale and engagement.
- Make sure your company adheres to WHS / OHS legislation.
